Whether for a daily trip, a vacation, a sporting competition, or a vet visit, transporting your dog safely relies on simple but often overlooked principles. This guide brings together the essentials for stress-free travel, regardless of the mode of transport chosen.

1. The legal framework

Identification Microchip mandatory in most European countries, kept current with the owner's up-to-date contact details.

The EU pet passport An official document combining identification, complete vaccination history, and owner details, essential for any cross-border trip within the EU.

Rabies vaccination Required in nearly all countries, with a non-negotiable minimum waiting period after the initial vaccination — to plan several weeks to months ahead.

Destination-specific requirements Some countries require an antibody titer test or echinococcosis treatment within a precise window before arrival.

2. Choosing your mode of transport

Car: the most flexible option. Train: rules vary by company. Plane: the most demanding option, with strict weight, breed, and crate-size restrictions. Motorhome: a solution particularly suited to active dog owners.

3. Non-negotiable safety equipment

The travel crate, securely fastened to the vehicle. The approved safety harness. The access ramp, to protect joints.

4. Ventilation and temperature, the major concern

An enclosed compartment can reach dangerous temperatures within just minutes. Never leave a dog alone in a parked vehicle.

5. Before departure

Gradually get the dog used to its crate or harness ahead of time, avoid a heavy meal before departure, check all documents, identify an emergency vet at the destination in advance.

6. During the journey

A break roughly every two hours, always in the shade during hot weather, splitting food rather than giving one large meal en route.

7. Special cases

Brachycephalic breeds, puppies and senior dogs, females in heat all need particular attention.

8. The travel emergency kit

Documents in a waterproof pouch, first-aid kit, medication supply, local and home vet contact details.
